PSY 505 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ego Ideal, Oedipus Complex, Death Drive
Document Summary
Purpose: to find out what is really going on in the unconscious recesses of our human minds. Conscious: all the sensations and experiences of which we are aware at any given moment, limited aspect of the personality. Pre conscious: storehouse of memories, perceptions, and thoughts of which we are not consciously aware at the moment but we can easily summon into consciousness. Pessimistic view of man: constantly struggling, people who handle the struggle better develop better. Tragic view of life, there was room for a lot of pleasure, but that pleasure could be problematic: the structure of the personality. The psyche (the mind, not the brain) is made of the id, ego, and super ego. Reality principle: considers the physical reality as well as the social reality, provides appropriate constraints on the expression of the id instincts. Secondary processes: socially acceptable ways of satisfying drives, rational thinking, learning, memory, helps the id out: two components of the ego.
