Less Than Optimal Defenses
Less than optimal responses - there could be malfunctioning for any kind of protective
force including the immune system - immune system changes in a life span; it increases in
childhood and decreases in old age - little kids fall sick a lot, it's because they are
developing their specific immune responses
As an elderly person you also lose some immune response - things don't work as well -
elderly people should avoid epidemics or avoid sick people for ex
Immune function changes during the lifespan, increasing in childhood and decreasing in
old age
There are also Unhealthy lifestyles that can impair immune functioning such as
Insufficient vitamin A or E that can decreases production of lymphocytes and
antibodies
Vitamin C - some people over do it- it is helpful in the effectiveness of the
phagocytes important in effectiveness of phagocytes
High fat and cholesterol intake can impair immune functioning and
Poor sleep impairs can also immune functioning
Nutrition is imp for immune system
Some Diseases of the Immune System
HIV/AIDS
Tonsillitis - sometimes the immune system gets infected- because the immune system is
made up of cells so they can get infected
Mononucleosis - is a viral disorder and this is when the B cells/the B lymphocytes becomes
infected and the Lymph node and spleen became enlarged - mono doesn't cause complete
immunosuppression (immuno: the immune system, suppression: suppressed - the
immune system is suppressed) because the T cells increase in number and they are able to
identify and destroy the infected B cells
Lymphoma: tumor of the lymphatic tissue
Autoimmune Disorders: your immune system attacks it's own tissue - autoimmune: attack
yourself so you have immunity against yourself
Immune response attacks its own tissue
o Rheumatoid Arthritis: attacking you own joints
o Systemic lupus erythematosis: disease of the connective tissue
o So in one your body thinks that the tissue in your joints is the enemy so it starts
attacking the tissue in your joints and this one says that connective tissue is
bad/ it's danger so I better attack that tissue - ut i oth diseases it’s ot
foreign tissue, it's tha malfunctioning immune system
