The Immune System and HIV / AIDS
Basics of the Immune System
Lymphatic system - these are the tissues and organs that produce and store cells that fight
against infection and disease and if we think about those cells, the first place we'll want to
go to is the:
Leukocytes- it means white blood cells but it's more of a pale color
they are A pale-coloured cell that acts as a part of the immune system by destroying
invading cells and removing debris like stuff you don't need that doesn't belong
there - so it's not just it kills things off, it removes it - if it doesn't belong in your
body, it's their job to get rid of it
They are Produced in the bone marrow and they include a few types of cells:
Include phagocytes, granulocytes, & lymphocytes
Immune System Organs include the:
Bone marrow it produces lots of cells in the blood but it produces the leukocytes as well
(the white blood cells) also produces the red blood cells
Lymph Nodes have compartments for storing some of the white blood cells and they are
found in the neck - so if you hear "my glands are swollen" - if you hear that it's because
the lymph nodes in your necks are inflamed - they can also be found in the armpit,
abdomen, or the groin and they have filters that capture antigens (Foreign material that
induces/generates the anti response - anything that produces an immune system
response is an antigen. Antigens can be proteins from bacteria or viruses or chemical,
anything that doesn't belong in your body)
There are also:
Lymph vessels kinda like a highway for your lymphatic tissue - so if you want your white
blood cells to get somewhere, they can go through the blood and the blood vessels but
there is also a system called lymph vessels that they can go through and they connect to
the lymph nodes - the lymph vessels connect to the lymph nodes and they carry a fluid
called lymph into the blood stream - the lymph has the white blood cells in it
Spleen in the upper left side of the abdomen, it filter antigens that the lymph vessels put
into the blood stream - we have lots of filters and one of them is the spleen. It is also the
home base for the white blood cells and it also removes worn out red blood cells (RBCells,
they have a limited shelf life) you can survive without your spleen but it has several useful
functions
Filters antigens that the lymph vessels put into the bloodstream
Tonsils trap foreign particles - some people have tonsils removed because they keep on
getting inflamed - why does this happen? Well that's where you filter out a lot of things
out of your blood stream and it filters out foreign particles but for some people because of

The immune system and hiv / aids, basics of the immune system. Lymphatic system - these are the tissues and organs that produce and store cells that fight against infection and disease and if we think about those cells, the first place we"ll want to go to is the: Immune system organs include the: bone marrow it produces lots of cells in the blood but it produces the leukocytes as well (the white blood cells) also produces the red blood cells. Antigens can be proteins from bacteria or viruses or chemical, anything that doesn"t belong in your body: there are also: There are a few different tissues but there"s a lot of overlap b/w them. They combine chemically with antigens to overcome their toxic effects. We are talking about cells involved in non-specific immune processes. There are certain types of cells that will respond to anything that is not you - defective cell, foreign cell, virus.
