Diagram on slide: They have categories - people think HIV is found in Africa - this is correct
and incorrect, there are different parts of the continent as it's found more in some
countries than others but it is true that almost 2/3 of people living with HIV are found in
sub-Saharan Africa
One of the places to be concerned abt HIV is Russia/Central Asia and in these places it's an
epidemic spread by injection drug use but its also spread by heterosexual sex and
homosexual sex b/w men
In sub-Saharan Africa it is found more among heterosexual populations
In norther America and western central Europe it can be found in any of the populations
but its also disproportionally found in men who has sex with men
HIV cares about transmitting itself regardless of gender etc and it transmits itself better
through some tissues than others - one of the places it transmits itself better through is
any place where there are immune system cells. There are immune system cells in the
rectum and anal canal - this is a good thing because our poop has all sorts of bacteria and
things you're trying to get rid of such as fungus virus and if we didn't have these cells here
we would die and our immune system protects this part of the body from this waste - if
someone penetrates the area and has sex with that area, that's not necessarily a problem
except that if someone has HIV and they contribute fluid through ejaculation
It can also spread through vaginal sex but its not through the vagina, its more through the
cervix - cervix is also protected by immune system cells, the vagina is less protected by
iue syste ells eause it's a ery sturdy orga ad it does’t eed the iue
system cells as much
Which is why heterosexual sex men are more likely to transmit HIV to a woman rather
than vice versa because a man contributes fluid inside the woman's body and the sperm
tries to travel to the cervix and they can carry the HIV virus with them
Where did it start: some people were eating animals that were around them including
primates like monkeys or they were having human animal fights and they got infected
with SIV and it's much likely to transfer from primate to primate which mutated a lot and
it mutates very quickly, it's not very efficient outside the body but inside the body it
evades your immune system, it makes one copy and then another one that's a bit
different, the diversity among the HIV virus in one person is bigger than a flu epidemic
world wide - the virus makes so many diff copies that its harder for the body to fight it off
- we have trouble creating vaccines for the flu virus, every year it's effectiveness rate is
different and so for HIV the amount of diversity in the virus within one person may be
bigger than a flu epidemic - so it's challenging
A lot of research is conducted using SIV because it's so close to HIV and they can infect
monkey's and carry out research
