Cardiovascular Disorders - Terms
Stroke some people call it a brain attack instead of a heart attack because it's disrupted
blood flow to brain
There are two major kinds of strokes:
Common stroke: this occurs when there's a blockage of an artery in the brain
Hemorrhagic strokes: (brain hemorrhage) occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts
and there's blood in the brain which is not travelling anywhere it's just sitting there in the
brain and it disrupts the chances of the tissues that have all the blood, imagine its like a
bruise in the brain, those cells arent getting access to healthy nutrients/new blood
Angina pectoris
There is also angina - when there is a strong pain/tightness in the chest because of a brief
obstruction in an artery/brief blockage but there is little or no damage occurring
It can be brought on due to over exercise or stress
It is problematic because we don't know what's going on here and it can be uncomfortable
for people - e. Soeoe all of a sudde starts haig pai/at reath ad does’t ko
what's happening - sometimes you don't know if you're having a heart attack or not
If you meet with your cardiologist they might tell you that you seem to having bouts of
angina
But the Angina itself while frightening is the least frightening thing you can have of all
these things
It's just a brief obstruction that passes
There is also a term - Aneurysm is a:
There is a Bulge in a weakened section of artery or vein - imagine you have a strong
artery wall, now imagine, because of pressure maybe there's too much pressure in
the arteries, a part of it got damaged ex. Like a balloon you rubbed it a lot, stretched
it one part a lot, that one part of the balloon will be weak so when you blow up the
balloon that one part might be budgie and it may be weaker cause it's thinner - the
bulge part is the aneurysm - usually there are also other bad things happening if
there's an aneurysm so ex. Imagine there are fatty patches but there's a part here
where blood is being pumped and it can go somewhere else. Ex. The blood is
supposed to go left and right but now its going elsewhere because it's being pushed
(ex. There's traffic and people find themselves driving on the shoulder) blood comes
out of the artery and rupture the blood vessel
Can lead to blood vessel rupture
Thrombi and Emboli
Thrombus is when there is a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel - so imagine it's
narrow and there's a blood clot and the next part is even narrower so it gets stuck and the

lood does’t trael fro this arter, it's loked - sometimes the clot is pushed forward
and it travels from its original site to a new site and usually from a bigger artery to a
smaller artery and embolism is when the clot (the original thrombus) travels from one site
to another site
Pulmonary embolism: lung embolism - clot in leg, clot gets pushed and travels to the lung
where there are very small/fine arteries and blocks part of a lung. Then the lung has to
work hard, heart has to work hard - patient has pulmonary embolism and heart stops
working
Typically its older people who die of blood embolism
