PSY 607 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Atypical Antipsychotic, 5-Ht Receptor, Clozapine
Document Summary
Existing medications were limited by 3 things: side-effects, individual differences in who respond, scope of the response was limited even within an individual. Medications do not remove the underlying fundamental pathology of mental disorders, they only remove the symptoms of the disorder and allow for coping. Positive symptoms of schizophrenia = delusions, hallucinations should be present, but are in excess. Negative symptoms of schizophrenia = lack of emotional modulation/flat affect + lack of social interaction + poverty of speech/don"t talk much should be present, but are in deficits. There are over 100 modified versions of animal models for drug testing (we discussed only 3) Punished responding = conflict between wanting (positive) and avoiding the potential pain of that seeking behaviour (negative) when the rats were extremely hungry, they still risked potential harm to get the food (e. g. seen with social phobia) *anti-anxiety drug (valium) + alcohol restore punished responding. Milk-maze = involved searching in an organized/systematic approach for the ledge.
