Community psychology a discipline concerned with understanding people in the context of their communities, the prevention of problems in living, the celebration of human diversity and the pursuit of social justice through social action. Community psychology (cp) has a long past, but a short history . 1890s 1920s: the labor and social movement in the us & canada saw the rise of social activism and the development of community programs to assist the poor and the marginalized. The mental health movement of the 1960s advocated an intrapyschic approach mental illness resides within the individual; focused on changing the individual. The social reform movement of the 1960s recognized a psychostructural approach mental illness results from poor social structures; focuses on changing society. The swampcott conference held in boston in 1965 focused on community mental health.
