SSH 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Inductive Reasoning, Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens
Document Summary
Argument patterns - 6 patterns, 4 of them are valid and 2 are invalid. we"ll have to know on the quiz if the argument is an instance of one of them. Diagraming arguments - practice a lot, can get tricky. Pictorial representation of the logic behind the argument. Important because if you cant diagram the argument then you don"t really understand it. (3. 7, 3. 8) don"t try the really long ones because the test questions will be a few sentences at most. If understood properly it should become your go-to for outlining arguments/ essays. Must know the ow chart of inductive/deductive - sound/unsound. Key idea behind validity: a valid argument may never have true premises and a false concluding because a valid argument is truth preserving. Sound: argument is valid and the premises are true. Invalid: more likely than not our conclusion is true.
