Ssh 301 research design and qualitative methods (dr. knight) Research is probably one of the dirtiest words in the indigenous world"s vocabulary. What was produced from research is problematic. It is difficult to discuss research, methodology and indigenous peoples without understanding the complex ways in which the pursuit of knowledge is deeply embedded in the multiple layers of imperial and colonial practices. The power of research was not in the visits made by researchers to our communities, nor in their fieldwork and the rude questions they often asked . The power was in those individuals who wielded it as an instrument. Recognizes the knowledge accumulated in indigenous communities. Indigenous values, beliefs, and behaviors must be incorporated into the praxis of participatory research. This is not seen as an obstacle to research but as a site for possible learning and shared engagement and long term social change. The undemocratic paradigm of biological determinism and biology and the third world.
