When people live in groups, they develop common knowledge, languages, customs, values. Culture is learned through observation, imitation, conditioning. Materialistic culture: clothing, utensils, transportation, food, architecture. Nonmaterialistic culture: religion, norms, values & beliefs, language. Components of culture: symbols: things with shared meanings, gender: typically male-dominated (in history, politics, teaching, high positions), sexualisation/objectification of females, word association (engineer/doctor is associated with men, nurse/caregiver is associated with women, values: norms, folkways, mores, laws. Fads: temporary, widely copied behaviour: bodysuits, silly bandz, silly putty, big hair. Globalization: the spread of a culture, or manifestation of a culture in others. Ie, western culture spreads other cultures eating more meat, consuming western music, clothing, values.
