SOC 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Jackson Katz, Heterosexuality, Homophobia
Document Summary
Representations of sexuality and homophobia in popular culture. The question of how sexual orientation is developed has long been the site of debate. Two positions on the matter: as a product of society or as a product of biology. Sexuality is produced and taught, or sexuality is biological. Jackson katz: heterosexuality & homosexuality are not objective but rather subjective reflecting a system of inclusion or exclusion within social spaces. David halperin: queer by traditional definition is whatever is at odds with the normal, the legitimate, the dominant. The term queer then reflects a positioning in terms of comparison with the so- called normative. Sexuality is an identity based on the object of one"s desire, as classified by gender in contemporary understanding. Heteronormative romance is signaled by boy meets girl . Queer theory suggests there is no real norm rather normal is a constructed category created via language. Heterosexuality is understood as the norm against which homosexuality is defined as deviant.
