Document Summary

Approaches: quantitative approaches-what is favoured by the most people, leftovers-what remains after we separate out high culture, mass culture-popular culture as inauthentic, manipulative. Right vs left perspectives (we are considered brainwashed) hipsters are considered mass culture. Concerns of american imperialism, cultural appropriation: of the people-originating with people, folk culture, agency is present. No consideration of commercialism: hegemony (gramsci)- dominance over - pop culture as a site of struggle and resistance. Dominated groups win the consent of subordinated groups in society. Pop culture is neither imposed from above nor below. Never an equal balance, but never tipped towards subordinated groups, in favour of dominant groups. Dominant group resistance is incorporated to or neutralized by dominant groups: marxist-culture emerges from social relations of production. Understands culture and pop culture as super structure. Pop culture is influenced by how we are organized to how we survive and how we live day to day.
