Week 11: child, sibling, parent and elder abuse + social change. Personal interventions: children receive counseling at the women"s shelter with their mother. They prioritize keeping the family together vs. individual safety: reconstructive approach 3 stages o1. Child + abuser receive individual counseling, separately o2. Parent (that is not the abuser) + child treated together to mend their relationship. Usually the non- abusive parent (mother) is blamed by the child for the abuse because they did not step in > mother is supposed to be the caregiver and therefore the child expects her to intervene. When she doesn"t, the child begins to resent her. o3. Counseling is not preventative, it is after the fact. Institutional reforms are also after the fact". In cases of suspected child abuse, the first agency that gets notified is the children"s aid society. Cas sometimes asks the police to accompany them when they make contact with the family for the first time.
