Ian haney lopez: race is a formation, not a thing. We talk about race as if it will always exist. Lopez claims that race isn"t fiction, but a social construction. Reification/to reify: to make something into an object, especially an object that can be traded or sold at a market . When we reify race, we cannot talk about its formation it cannot be stopped. Thing: universal truth, racism has always been intact from beginning of human species, races will always exist. Universalism: when the one stands in for the all, or when something is thought to be a common experience or a shared trait or generalized to all of humanity. In order to make race happen, we have to invent and keep inventing a division between humans. Mexicans: transformed from a nationality to a race. That happens through the social constructions of race. Racialization: the process whereby racial meaning is attached to people.
