Document Summary
The things we learn through our personal experiences tend to be somewhat haphazard, as they depend on the situations we have encountered in our life, which are in turn, affected by our relationships. Your experience in social setting determines where whether you are perceived to be a member of a dominant group. Generalizable knowledge: knowledge that can be extended to understand a group of people larger than the group from whom info was collected. Another way we learn things is through common sense; we make choices and form opinions on the basis of what everybody knows (we all agree on what is sensible) One way people come to know things in society is through mass media. The prominence of mass media as a source of info in our culture means that is has substantial effect on our understanding of the world we live in. We are rarely taught to be critical consumers of information.
