Familie: hylobatidae (gibbons and siamangs lesser apes) The great apes used to be placed in a separate family pongidae, but are now put with humans in hominidae. Within hylobatidae, there are 8 species of gibbons and 1 species of siamangs. They are all restricted to south east asia. They are all adapted to brachiation (hanging) Hominidae includes four living genera: orangutans (two species), gorillas (two species), Orangutans are only found in se asia (sumatra, borneo) They have long arms, curved fingers and short feet. Males reach 80kg, females 35kg (high sexual dimorphism). Adult males put on a lot of extra body fat during mating season and develop cheek flanges. Western gorillas (gorilla gorilla) are restricted to equatorial africa. There are two species western lowland gorilla (gorilla gorilla gorilla) and cross river gorilla (gorilla gorilla dielhi) Easter gorillas have two subspecies: easter lowland gorillas (gorilla beringei graueri) and mountain gorillas) gorilla beringei beringei are found in central equatorial africa.
