Most commonly used psychotropic drugs in the world. It is a stimulant (stimulated central nervous system (cns)) Crosses the placenta which may potentially increase risk of birth defects. May increase risk of bladder ad cancer in men. Contains more than 400 compounds and chemicals. As it burns a tobacco cigarette also produces tar and carbon monoxide. Tar settles in bronchioles (increase cancer risk, damages cilia, mucus) Carbon monoxide (reduced oxygen carrying capacity of blood and may cause lesions associated with atherosclerosis. Brain: nicotine first stimulates the nervous system then triggers release of tranquilizing morphine like amino acids. Spreads to the nervous system in 8 seconds. Blood vessels: vessels constrict, causing higher blood pressure. Brain: alters mood regulating chemicals, stimulates cravings for more nicotine. Mouth and throat: dulls taste buds, irritates the membranes. Lungs: damages the air sacs which affects the lungs ability to bring in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.
