BPK 140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Sarcopenia, Diminishing Returns, Atherosclerosis
Document Summary
Exercise can increase hdl and the ratio of hdl to ldl fats as well as lower total blood fat. The loss of bone density that occurs with age can be quite disabling if one starts from a low density. Strength and weight bearing exercises increase bone density. Lack of exercise is a risk factor for some cancers. Recently breast cancer has been identified as one such cancer. One possible mechanism for this is an increase in enzymes that remove free radicals. Both the lower blood fats and greater angiogenesis can reduce the risk of, and severity of, atherosclerosis. Back pain accounts for the second most lost work days (the common cold is first). Strength and flexibility of certain muscles can reduce and alleviate back problems. If you are not suffering from a sore back, you are happier and more likely to engage in activity: other bodily enhancements from physical activity. A moderate amount of exercise enhances immune function.
