Tight junctions between endothelial cells (cells that are lying under neural tissues) prevent transport of large solutes: promoted by astrocytes foot processes secreting paracrine on to the endothelial cells. Astrocyte foot processes not acting as barrier themselves: prevents hydrophilic substances (not proteins) from going through paracellular transport. Oxygens are transported across the bbb through transcellular diffusion (small, uncharged very permeable) about 15% of blood pumped by heart at rest goes to brain. Glucose only material that brain can make atp out of; about of consumed glucose goes to brain; glucose transporters move them across bbb since they are too big for diffusion. Discuss the location and organization of white vs. gray matter.
