Document Summary

Lecture 16 regulation of blood pressure i. Map = diastolic pressure + 1/3 pulse pressure: pulse pressure = systolic pressure diastolic pressure, represents the average pressure in the arteries during one heart beat, it is determined more by diastolic pressure than systolic pressure. It is influenced by blood flow and resistance: map = q x r. Baroreceptors found in: carotid sinus -> carotid sinus nerve and glossopharyngeal nerve, aortic arch -> vagus nerve (cn x) 2: coronary artery -> vagus nerve, ex. coronary pressure is increased (sensed through increased stretch) -> coronary baroreflex mediates vasodilation -> decreases. Medulla: cell bodies in petrosal and nodose ganglia, baroreceptor fibers -> nts in medulla, excitatory interneurons -> nucleus ambiguus and dmnv -> increased parasympathetic output. Baroreceptor efferents: spinal cord injury can greatly affect ability to regulate map, many efferents exit through thoracic spine -> if damaged above this point then unable to regulate bp properly.
