*remember: two basic forms of film we look at: realism and formalism: continuity editing/analytical editing. In continuity editing, the cut is minimized so much so that we barely notice it/them. Establishing shot- shows where characters are (ex. Opening scene in vertigo): pov shot- exactly what it sounds like. Two shot- medium/medium close up; sets up a conversation between two people. Singles - establish objective and psychological identification. We can have different reactions to the same shots based on what shot is. May indicate the passage of time or change of. Movement, rhythmic, and graphic editing. Fade out/in (fade to black) Wipes (ins, side to side, top to bottom) Breaks continuity of time and space. Used for dramatic effect or some other aesthetic purpose: man with the movie camera (2015) by dziga vertov. Sync - source is visible, matches action. Diagetic sound (can be sync or async) - exist in world of film; characters.
