Document Summary

Music of the 20th century seems so different from the music of the past. But modern music does have deep roots within the music that preceded it. We need to understand what came before in order to know what was abandoned in 20th century music. Functional tonality (aka common practice): most applied within 1600-1900. Major musical periods (during reign of functional tonality) Following the collapse of the roman empire, there was a period of social and political chaos called the dark ages . The catholic church eventually emerged as a powerful authority around 700. Sung in monasteries, where there was no congregation. Only available for a small group of aristocrats. At first, sacred music was passed down in oral tradition without being written down (ex. nursery rhymes) When people realized that a lot of music was being lost or altered because of the oral tradition, a system of notation was invented. Importantly, music was just pure melody at this time.
