A social event rather than a private thing. Only exists in relation to an other. Arise within the context of social experience -> language. Thought -> rooted from language -> internal dialogue. Initially, we communicate through a conversation of gestures. The conversation of gestures only becomes language when these gestures become significant symbols. Once the individual can interpret the meaning of his gestures. Being able to call out or bring forward the response that your gesture calls out in others. Mead -> when one uses significant symbols, one is taking the role of the other in the regulation of one"s own conduct. One becomes a human as one can become an object to oneself. The 1st phase -> the doer, the feeling, instinctive, sensuous being.
