The use of sound makes it scarier, offbeat melody is upsetting to nervous system. Staircases play large role in horror films, prolong action. People like to adopt a celebratory notion of cinema, movies are wonderful. Cinema has a power that engages our senses so profoundly its different than any other art. Critical (horkheimer and adorno: movies are positive, think movies are businesses, cater to lcd, all movies are the same. Hollywood makes blockbusters bc they draw huge audience, not bc theyre artistically appealing. Makes sequels bc safer economic gamble to follow same formula. Same a-list actors in title roles bc past show they generate box office success. The best approach is not to suggest that films are always evil pieces of capitalist propaganda. Nor is it see all films as important reflections of cultural, social and political issues. Rather, we should approach films as conveyos as cultural values.
