Document Summary

Cmns 260 week 9 data collection & information gathering methods. Introduce key aspects of qualitative interviewing, fieldwork, focus groups. When we"re looking at the qualitative aspect we"re looking at content and cases with several variables. Focus group: a type of group interview in which an interviewer asks questions to the group, and answers are given in an open discussion among the group members. Example of a focus group: the nationwide audience. Viewing broadcasts of the program with 29 small groups 2-13 people. Much individually based interview research is flawed by a focus on individual as social atoms divorced from their social context. Was interested in how the decoding process was deeper than an individual level. Was able to study the unit of analysis of groups of people. Follow-up questions: if you want them to elaborate. Probing questions: if you want to go into detail. Silence: language of cases and context becomes very important.
