Week 8 lecture, intro to historical research: qualitative research in archives. Qualitative method #3 historical research: photographs in archives. The past no longer exists, they"re disappeared worlds. Analog (historical) vs digital ; earlier forms of photography weren"t as advanced as digital photography. Label the technology of being invented in 1839. Analogy cameras have a specific relation to reality , there was a chemical reaction when the light hit the lenses of the camera and recorded the event. Felt they traced real events and people that no longer exist. Karcauer, 1920s labeled old photographs as a ghost like presence that haunts the present. Changing technologies > changes what can be photographed: the technologies have changed so much compared to todays digital photography. Consisted of props to keep people still: was a very expensive and toxic process from the chemicals of developing the picture.
