Introducion: 2013 nsduh: 15. 9% of americans > 12 yrs used illicit drug in past year. Ofenders: 20-79: early drug use common; linked to adverse outcome, drug od was leading cause of injury death in 2012. For age 25-64, od caused more death than mvas: cdc (2014): 114 die per day as a result of od and 6,748 are treated in emergency rooms, complex relaionship between substance abuse & crime. 2013 ontario student drug use & health survey: survey of 10,272 ontario students gr. History of illicit drugs: many drugs currently illegal were once legiimately used. For religious, medical, recreaional purposes: 1914: harrison narcoic act (us, 1919: volstead act (us) Bc was enacted in 1917 and repealed in 1921. Progressively decreased responsiveness to a drug: physical dependence. Psychological distress & physical pain during withdrawal: psychological dependence (pd) Primary pd: overwhelming desires to use drug (posiive reinforcement) Secondary pd: expectaion of potenial withdrawal efects encourage coninued use (negaive reinforcement)
