Crim 104 - lecture 2 - the classical school, the positive school, emile durkheim. Many ideas in crim came from field of soc. Until recently, crim was sub-discipline of sociology. Began w/ english revolution, ended w/ french revolution. Regarded as founder of sociology of knowledge. Examined how diff types of social organization, social class positions & social conditions affect forms of thought & cultural perspectives. Looked at how laws created & how conformed to thoughts. E. g. when slavery seen as acceptable, slave owners legal, when slavery seen as unacceptable, slave owners illegal. Regarded as one of founders of sociology. Thought scientific method would replace religion as force in society. Impressed by newton"s law of gravity & w/ scientific method. Application of scientific principles to study of human phenomenon. Concerned w/ moral order & moral disunity. Opposed to social criticism, social conflict, social change. Opposite of critical, negativistic philosophy of french revolution & enlightenment. Disliked kind of thinking leading to hierarchy.
