Delinquency as a failure of personal and social controls- 1951 article by albert reiss, and early social control theorist and a member of the chicago school. He said that personal controls came from within and consisted of an individual"s internalization of (and conformance with) the rules and norms of society. Reiss also emphasized the importance of informal social controls exercised by parents and by community institutions such as recreational facilities and schools. Social bonds- term popularized by travis hirschi in 1969 social bond theory , emile durkheim coined term 70 years beforehand and used it in a similar manner. Durkheim used it to describe the social ties or links that unite individuals and attach them to society. Durkheim talked about mutual interdependence, and the collective conscience- our shared values and beliefs, shared traditions and social practices, etc. Travis hirschi used durkheim"s notions of attachment and belief in this 1969 social bond theory.
