Five common law duties of police officers lie at the core of police work: to prevent crime, to protect life and property, to preserve the peace, to apprehend offenders, to enforce laws. Crime is decreasing but police remain busy. Much time spent dealing with non-policing matters. Patrol officers across canada work a variety of shift lengths - 8-12 hours. Research suggest that 10 hr shifts are optimal. Two primary shifting methods used by bc police services: flat-shifting (used by rcmp, delta, saanich and other, rotating shift schedule (vancouver) 4 days, 4 days off, 4 nights 4 nights off, ^ shifting in demand. In most police services, patrol officers are organized into teams of officers. Each team has a minimum and maximum compliment.
