Patrol officers across canada work a variety of shift length- from 8-12 hours. Research suggests that 10hr shifts are optimal. Two primary shifting methods used in bc police services: Flat shifting (used by rcmp, delta, saanich, and others) In most police services, patrol officers are organized into teams of officers. Each team has a minimum and maximum compliment. Patrol-units are typically deployed as one-or two-officer cars depending on a variety of factors. In some departments, designated members of a patrol team will be deployed in plain clothes. Majority of police work is assigned to patrol officers by dispatchers. For most of the lower mainland dispatch is centralized at e-comm 911 in vancouver.
