Crim 220 - lecture 12 - field research, secondary data, content analysis. Go directly to phenomenon, observe it as completely as possible. Especially appropriate for topics best understood in their natural setting. Ethnography -focuses on detailed accurate description rather than explanation. Direct observation role questions: (1) complete participant ( undercover ) Do not disclose as researcher - pretend to be genuine member of the club . Reactivity - you may affect what you"re studying (2) participant-as-observer & (3) observer-as-participant. (2) p-a-o - participate, disclose as researcher. (3) o-a-p - interact but do not participate. Cannot interact w/ or ask for clarification. When selecting 1 of 4 roles, think about type of data needed to be collected. Subcultures - use informants to get foot in the door . Bear in mind 2 stages of sampling. Some way to continuously measure what is being studied. Picking a specific time, defined by situation. Good for studying particular type of behaviour.
