Great variation in size and task environment of police services. Major urban departments typically follow a paramilitary hierarchical structure. Structurally, usually have some form the following divisions or sections: operational patrol, investigative, support services, admin, human resources, research and planning. Provincial police: ontario, quebec and part of newfoundland. Rcmp police provincially, and municipally under contract in all other provinces. Newfoundland: royal newfound constabulary police part of the province; rcmp polices the rest. Also independent municipal police and regional police. 4 rcmp division pacific, northwest, central, and atlantic. Enforce federal statutes and have power of peace officers and customs officers. Broad mandate: stretched too thin, larger police force but they have to go everywhere. Nationwide recruiting and centralized training: military style training centralized, boot-camp like. Transfer policy: parachute policing, move officers based on operational needs.
