CRIM 355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Scientific Method, Suicide Methods, Forensic Pathology
Document Summary
Crim 355 - lecture 3 - identification of the victim, part ii. Once tentative identification established, must be confirmed, usually be pre-existing record/memory. Most obvious method coming to mind & one seen most frequently on tv - visual identification. Still done sometimes but it is least scientific method available. Unlike morgue identifications often shown on tv, identification performed in most sensitive manner possible under circumstances. Deceased placed in small viewing room that has large, curtained window. Family member taken to small adjacent room & views body through window. If dead person has been injured, bandages would have been placed on wounds, just as they would had person still been alive. If body decomposed but there is unique identifying feature, entire body would be draped in sheet w/ just that one feature exposed for viewing. Very common way of identifying ppl if their fingerprints on record.
