Almost all deaths fall under coroner"s act. Coroner"s system in canada goes back more than a thousand years. First coroners - date back to time of alfred the great. Entire cjs system wrapped up in men alone - completely responsible for investigating the death. Act - stated that when summoned by bailiff/any honest man, coroner would attend death/any other sort of crime. Would order men from 4 diff nearby towns to assist in investigation. To investigate death, coroner would call inquest. Primary goal of coroner - determine cause of death & means by which person died. As time passed, coroner came to be responsible for death itself, but police also investigated death if it is homicide.
