Principles of death investigation: to rule out criminal activity, to establish cause of death (provincial mandate, information for next of kin (nok, prevention of further deaths, civil law concerns (life insurance, estate settlement) Coroners : are sudden death investigators, have a medical, investigative or legal background, attend sudden death scenes, do not perform autopsies. Goal of coroner"s investigation: to publicly ascertain the facts leading up to and surrounding a sudden, unnatural or unexpected death, to make reasonable recommendations to prevent future loss of life under similar circumstances. Role of the coroner: investigate sudden, unnatural and unexpected deaths, death scene investigator, variety of backgrounds, do not perform autopsies, fact- nding, not fault- nding. Investigative powers (section 11, coroner"s act: take possession and examine the body, enter and inspect any place relating to the death, inspect information in any records, seize anything pertinent to the investigation. Week 13 coroner"s service: authorize any person to exercise these powers.
