The role of play in classrooms is often debated. Many educators believe it is an integral part of children"s education and, therefore, regularly incorporate it into the school day. On the other hand, some parents and/or educators believe that play takes away valuable time from academic instruction and should not be a classroom activity. Reflect on this controversy as you read through the textbook and the commentary on vygotsky"s theory. A commonly held belief is that children must be popular at school in order for healthy social development to occur.
