Big 5 personality traits : openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Child is at least party born with their temperament. How children behave in any situation is influenced by their temperament. Individual differences in reactivity and regulation: reactivity = responses to environment, regulation = behaviour/attention/emotion (some kids are quicker to laugh/cry, those kids are less regulated) We see individual differences in babies very early in life, on a variety of dimensions of temperament - hasn"t been learned yet, so must be biological. Could be that we get better at coping. Could be epigenetics- can turn on/off genes from experiences: certain experiences may be required in order for temperament to express itself. When we talk to babies, we talk to them as if they understand. this helps them learn to focus attention. Wednesday, march 2, y: study of romanian kids had none of that. Shows that kids had high level of add as they never learned how to focus attention.
