Interestingly, there appears to be no mention of peers, reading buddy programs (i. e. pairing grade 6 students with grade 1 students to read together each week), or educational television shows (i. e. sesame street, dora the explorer, blues clues). Much of the methods for teaching reading and writing were paper-based storytelling, handwriting exercises, copying of examples, and spelling/dictation tests. With the e(cid:454)(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) of o(cid:374)e stude(cid:374)t"s ho(cid:373)e s(cid:272)hooli(cid:374)g u(cid:374)til the (cid:1007)(cid:396)d g(cid:396)ade, all learned by adhering to (and supplementing) the structure of formal educational institutions and the materials provided. Several had feelings regarding whether they were doing well or not and whether they should seek help; however, no one seemed to recall the actual grades (or report card-like assessments) they were assigned.
