Metaphors are so powerful b/c of their ability to concretely & specifically describes as it enlarges (ideas) They say something about something else that gives it new light & a new perspective. There"s more meaning in going literal to figurative. Remember that speaker isn"t the writer so speaker isn"t aware of the point/meaning/implications of what he/she"s saying: there"s a difference b/w what the poem says & what the speaker says, ex. Anorexia pov affected by eating disorder, the poem has pov of the speaker. It is a kind of allusion: in an artistic medium (ex. Poem) describes to some effect & detail another medium (ex. What makes ekphrasis more than an allusion (cid:0) commentary, it focuses on & interprets the other work of art, it"s an interpretation, it promotes an understanding of the work.
