July 23, 1952: military coup was swift and bloodless. Muhammad naguib, an army general, was public face of free officers. Kicked out king farooq (descendant of muhammad ali) Nasser tried to get funding for high dam from world bank. To balance, he signed a deal to get arms from czechoslovakia (a soviet-influenced state) Withdrew support for aswan dam; deeply offended nasser. It was previously controlled by british and french. The revenue from the canal would now go to egyptian government. Money accrued would be used to fund the aswan high dam project. Land, sea and air invasion was very well-coordinated. Hadn"t given up hope for egyptian cooperation against soviets. Forced the withdrawal of british, french, israeli forces. Group of countries that didn"t take sides during cold war. Nasser"s presidency was a period of cultural/film production. 1967 - crushing defeat of egypt in war.
