Bioethics is a recent phenomenon: focus on new trends in technology. Studied by wealthy people focusing on issues relevant to the group (ex. Period of optimism in medicine -> science would cure most/all ids. Ids are often not dangerous for wealthy western academics (money to cure) Complex issues like ids are difficult because of interdisciplinary nature of bioethics. Some ids have high levels of morbidity and mortality. Infectious -> face worries of public panic, outbreaks, decisions made under limited time/info. Social programs need to be subservient to public health (catastrophic consequences of ids) Some ids progress quickly -> need fast response from ph officials. Connected to globalization -> resistance in one area can affect another area. Individual demand for fast, full treatment -> breeds drug resistance (threat to community) Most ids are preventable/treatable yet widespread (infectious) religious convictions, free-riding, fear of side effects slow immunization. Developing countries lack resources for improvements in sanitation and treatment.
