HSCI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Tubal Ligation, Vas Deferens, Miosis
Document Summary
Gonadotropin releasing hormone (gnrh)- secreted by the hypothalamus to control release of other hormones. Follicle stimulating hormone (fsh)- promotes the production of sperm, released by anterior pituitary gland luteinizing hormones (lh)- controls the production of testosterone released by the anterior pituitary gland. Testosterone- produced by interstitial cells of the gonad, important for normal development and functioning of the male reproductive organs. Fertilization- union of a sperm and egg nucleus normally in the oviduct to form a zygote. Pregnancy- begans with implantation usually 6-16 days after fertilization. Birth control pills- synthetic estrogen and progesterone blocks fsh and lh release at pituitary and stop follicular development and ovulation. Iud: small plastic piece inserted into the uterus to prevent implantation. Diaphragm: soft latex cups that covers the cervix so sperm cant enter the uterus. Vasectomy: cutting and sealing the vas deferens. Plan b: a morning after pill upsets the normal uterine cycle so an embryo has a hard time implanting (85% work)
