Science - epistemology, way of knowing about natural world. Science and scientists should be objective: always fluid, conclusions may be modified as technology changes and our understanding grows, arises from many approaches (such as the scientific method) Deductive reasoning - general principle which predicts outcomes or observations. Inductive to formulate hypothesis: deductive to make testable problem, then experiment or observe. Theory - well-supported and wide ranging explanation of some aspect of the physical universe. Cell theory, natural selection, gravity theory: theories do not prove, they support. Test #1 - replace batteries with new ones -> hypothesis falsified. Test #2 replace lightbulb with new one -> does not falsify hypothesis. Experimental group - variable that is purposely changed or manipulated: a. k. a. Independent variable (iv) manipulated to see effect on dv: all other variables must stay unchanged, dependant variable (dv) is the parameter responds or changes due to iv.
