Routine immunization prevents 2-3 million deaths each year. 1974: world health assembly launches epi (expanded programme on immunization) Tb, polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and measles. When epi launched, only 5% children were vaccinated. Today: who has expanded to 11 diseases (hepb, hib, rotavirus, hpv etc. ) Gavi = global alliance for vaccines and immunization. Much improvement in child health in last 2 decades is due to increased immunization coverage. Number of deaths caused by vaccine preventable disease decreased from 900,000 in 2000 to 400,000 in 2010. 2012: 111 million infants vaccinated with all 3 doses. On average one dose of dtp costs 20 cents. Highly infectious disease as 1 in 200 lead to irreversible paralysis. Price per opv dose is inexpensive (12-21 cents) Protects against meningitis and tb in children. Price per dose is 7 to 16 cents. Hepb is a viral infection attacking the liver.
