Discrete mathematics is concerned with mathematical
structures which take on a discrete values instead of
continuous ones as described by the real-number system the
case of continuous mathematics; that is, integers are the
cornerstone of discrete mathematics. This branch of
mathematics provides an excellent method of modeling
real-world phenomena that vary from one discrete state to
another.
Moreover, Discrete Mathematics provides the formal
basis for computing science since computers are finite
state machines.
The difference between mathematics and other
disciplines is the basic foundation on deductive proof
theory as its modus operandi for determining truth in
contrast with, say, science which relies upon
carefully analyzed experience (induction coupled
with rationalism and empiricism –the two basic
principles of the Modern Scientific Method).
