As perception, we considered as discontinuous; in reality, they are continuous. When pronouncing [p a], the buf of air may last longer depends on your past. Between-category distances are perceived as greater experience (~100 ms) However, if it is 20 ms, it is hard to determine if it is aspirated or not. Time interval between the release of stop closure and the onset of voicing (of the following vowel) In hindi, there is 4th category (voiced aspirated) Experiment: categorical perception of [pa] and [p a] . Using synthetic speech to test speech perception (create a vot continuum) Present a pair of stimuli and discriminate (identify the sound diference) Present one stimulus and identify whether it is [pa] or [p a] . Hypothesis is once it passes the boundaries of 50 ms, you can notify the diferences. When people cannot perceive the diference, they are guessing (50%) When the sounds meets the boundary, they are certain (100%)
