Members of the legislative branch of government are often popularly elected. House of representatives and senate in the usa. Elections vary greatly, from those that can be considered democratic to those that coerce or manipulate voters into endorsing a dictatorial ruler. Practice of elections in many countries, especially newer democracies, falls between these 2 extremes. Even long-established democracies do not necessarily provide a completely fair election process. Are only meaningful if those elected have real power, the following conditions must exist: The right of all adult citizens to vote (universal suffrage) Elections held on a fairly regular basis. The size (number of voters) of these districts varies greatly by countries, and sometimes within countries. The same applies to the district magnitude: the number of representatives elected in each district. Gerrymandering is the manipulation of the divisions of the country into electoral districts so as to benefit a particular party.
