Southeast asia state and nation building and political leaders. Their legacies: leaders of the independence movements, negotiations with colonial powers, charisma and popularity among public, long periods of authoritarian rule, today their political successors still play important roles in respective countries. Why colonize southeast asia: natural resources, cheap labour, collect taxes, new consumers of european goods. Also a backdoor to china europeans wanted to trade with china, but the latter wasn"t interested. Thailand was the only country in sea that was never colonized by the europeans; signed treaties with these europeans entities to stay independent. Indonesia was a dutch colony (holland) while the phillipines was spanish. Sea was in an area where there are channels of communications interspersing. Place to harbour ships : singapore was an important deep harbour. Creation of empires is not western invention; european invention was the type of empire- creation that occurred in the 19th century.
