PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Basilar Membrane, Auditory Cortex, Detection Theory
Document Summary
Sensation- strictly involves the stimulation of the sense organs. Perception- involves selection, organization and interpretation of sensory inputs. Sensory branding- enlisting all of the senses to promote a product or brand. Defi(cid:374)itio(cid:374): (cid:373)ethods that (cid:373)easure the stre(cid:374)gth of a sti(cid:373)ulus a(cid:374)d a su(cid:271)je(cid:272)t"s se(cid:374)siti(cid:448)it(cid:455) to that sti(cid:373)ulus. These methods included asking simple yes or no questions. Like asking if they saw a light flash and recording at what minimum brightness they saw it flash. Signal detection: there is a lot of reason some stimuli are either not perceived or not sensed. There is a lot going on in our head, thoughts, memories, emotions, etc that cause some stimuli to get missed. Or maybe there is too much going on in the physical world around is for everything to get noticed. Stimulus- sound: frequency- how often the peak of the sound wave passes the ear or microphone measured in.
